My Future Self Helped Me Lose 50 Pounds
For nearly twenty years, I worked as a product manager at startups and Fortune 500 companies, building products designed to capture attention and convert customers.
This taught me behavioral economics and I became fascinated with choice architecture and how environments shape behavior. It was research I could test on myself. I was overweight, one point away from diabetes, and in search of things I could do to finally kick bad habits and stick to the healthy ones.
Inspired by Hal Hershfield's research showing that connecting with your future self increases long-term motivation, I built a prototype that sent me daily messages from my future self.
Waking up to a message instead of an alarm disrupted my instinct to hit snooze. Instead of "make the noise stop", my first conscious thought every morning became "should I ignore the message from my future self?" A beep is easy to stop. A reminder of your future potential is hard to dismiss. I lost 50 pounds—and two years later, I'm still down.
